It's funny what goes through one's mind while laying (lying?) in bed waiting to get up.
I mistakingly wrote the Eastern times----I went one hour in the wrong direction! OOPS!
So 9:00 is 10:00 Eastern, while 1:45 is 2:45 Eastern.
And one final thought-----regarding the English post a couple days ago.
I know many people struggle with the to, too, two and and there they're and their
But I've always struggled with Lying and Laying (see above!!!) :0)
So, which is correct in my first sentence my lovely English people ???? (Amanda, Julie...) :0)
Hello Amy, according to askOxford.com - Lying and Laying
ReplyDeleteDon't mix up 'lie' and 'lay'. You lay something, as in they are going to lay the carpet, but you lie down on a bed or other flat surface. Sentences such as he is laying on the bed or why don't you lie it on the bed? are wrong: correct forms are he is lying on the bed and why don't you lay it on the bed?
The past tense and past participle of 'lay' is 'laid', as in they laid the groundwork or she had laid careful plans; the past tense of 'lie' is 'lay' (he lay on the floor) and the past participle is 'lain' (she had lain on the bed for hours)
Hope this helps rather than confuses!
*chuckle*
ReplyDeleteIt COULD be darn confusing if I didn't really appreciate the importance of having good grammar.
:0)
What Amanda Said!
ReplyDeleteLots of good wishes for tomorrow and admiration.
Yes, Amanda is correct (of course). Lay means you are placing something. Lie means something is reclining under its own power - so to speak. I have to try to explain this to 6th graders who really couldn't care less about the difference.
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine - today we talked about who and whom. Some had never even heard of the word whom!!
I grew up and still live about 15 minutes from the Central Time Zone line. It is natural for me to have both time zones in my brain at all times. For example, I have to be in Auburn, Alabama at 9:00/10:00 next Wednesday for the Bonnie Hunter workshop. Every appointment has two times in my brain. I live in Alabama but am on Eastern time(or as we call it- Georgia time.)
Hi Amy,
ReplyDeleteNow, I am confused.I can honestly admit, my grammar and spelling stink.
