MIL quilting; Green Beauty Quilting; Stash Report Jan. 3-9

This is the MIL quilt I was working on yesterday morning before my body tuckered out on me. I only had one pass left of it to finish up, so shortly after starting downstairs this morning, I was removing this from the frame. I'm not sure who she was making it for, but it's another to add to the pile of finishes to hand to her at the end of the month.

I tried out my new pantograph on it: Watercourse by Lorien quilting. I purchased this for my Green Beauty {{Jared Takes a Wife}} in mind, so I thought trying it out on a smaller quilt was a wise decision.

And naturally, it was a piece of cake, so I spent the morning hours prepping a backing and batting in order to load Green Beauty onto the frame. I've gone through 7 bobbins already and am nearing the finish. But I think this may be where I leave it for the night. My mom is spending the night and is expected any moment; but more importantly, the Packer game has started!!!



I'm not ruling out heading back downstairs later, but....I won't get down on myself if I don't.

End-of-post update... Yup. Mom just arrived, with a GOODIE in tow! :0) Hancock Fabrics from the hometown was having a 50% off sale on batting, so I asked mom to pick me up a roll of Warm-n-Natural. Ya can't go wrong at $5.49/yard for a 20 yard roll.

Star struck; the girls' rooms & clothes, and the Farm have kept me away

I had ALL intentions of updating Thursday evening and again on Friday before leaving for the last weekend I'll have "free" pretty much until volleyball is over....BUT, I'll get to that in a moment.
First...

I woke on Thursday very motivated to quilt something for myself, not that I plan on keeping this quilt for sure.

I spent the morning piecing a backing of random scrappy 10" squares. Once lunch was made, eaten, and cleaned up, I was able to spend the rest of the day quilting away.

By 4:00, I was starting the binding, and by 4:30, the binding was completed by machine. I used the "Curly Q" pantograph yet again---most definitely my favorite so far!

Then.....
I went to peek on the girls.
DH and I BOTH laid in on the girls that morning that "enough was enough! The rooms get cleaned TODAY!" So, they spent the entire day upstairs...since 9:30.

**sigh**
Thank GOODNESS I was still motivated, because "MOMMY-STYLE CLEANING" ensued.

Five hours, four garbage bags and 5 boxes loaded with donations later....the rooms AND loft were seriously cleaned AND decluttered! It was 10:00 when I finally carried everything to the main floor; DH said he would take care of all the donations first thing Friday morning. So, by that time, I wasn't interested in updating the blog anymore.

THEN...comes Friday. I had some bloodwork scheduled right away in the morning; DH kept the girls with him while he took care of the donations AND took a much-needed trip to the local garbage dump. On the way back from my appointment, I stopped in at school to check over some last minute things to ensure that everything was ready for Monday morning's practice. In my years of maturing, I've started to live my a new motto...."expect the worst so then you'll never be disappointed." It's a good thing I was expecting the worst, because....that's ALMOST what I encounted. However.....bringing everyone up to speed----I spent a few hours this weekend with paperwork, and....well...... I guess I'm prepared as best I can be for tomorrow morning.

Okay....backtracking to Friday. When I arrived home, DH was still out-n-about, so I took a moment to catch up on emails and had ALL intentions of updating the blog. Well----remember "Pineapple Blossoms"? I received an email that a lady in TX was interested in having the quilt finished, so I spent the next hour between talking with her on the phone, checking my stash to see what I had available for backing and batting....blah, blah, blah...... DH had great timing, because I had just decided I needed to just break down and purchase some yardage for backing when he arrived home. So....off I went to do a quick fabric shopping spree so that I could have everything ready come Monday when I plan to start to finish the project.

THEN....some quick lunch while DH and Caitlyn were out in the garden picking green beans, cucumbers.....the usual lot.

THEN....(okay, but now, it was only 1:00)...I schlepped Cassie upstairs and we (she) tried on EVERY single piece of clothing she had in her closet AND dresser. At one point, DH asked if I would be ready to leave (for the farm) by 3:00----I asked him what time it was and he said 2:30. (Ummm.......we weren't even halfway through her closet!!!!). She kicked it into a little bit of a higher gear at that point, and FINALLY at 4:00, we were done! One box for donation and two boxes for "hand-me-downs" later, her closet AND dresser were COMPLETELY organized and full of clothes that actually fit her. But, she was a bit skimpy on how many pants she had for school. Guess what we did on Saturday??? ;0) She's now COMPLETELY set for school after that shopping spree (she came away with 7 more pairs of pants/jeans).

Oh....but...stay with me! Still on Friday here.........."CAITLYN----your turn now!!!!" (I don't think DH was too happy, but I was on a ROLL and still motivated, and it NEEDED to get done!!!!"
Candace was feeling left out a little bit, so she joined in here-n-there too. By 5:30....both Caitlyn and Candace's closets were organized. Their dressers have YET to be done, but I wasn't going to push my luck TOO much with DH. By 6:00......we were packed and rolling on our way to the farm.

The weekend was very relaxing. Once I told myself I didn't need to be so ANAL about having perfect volleyball notes and that it was okay to have scribbles and things crossed off----that it didn't need to be rewritten AGAIN just for "meeting" stuff......I was able to kick back and enjoy the weekend. MIL and I headed in to Walmart (which is where we did the school shopping for Cassie). We (of course) had to check out the fabric section. Boy, I tell ya!....this is ONE Walmart that STILL carries fabric and GREAT fabric selections at that. I walked away with some backing for BOTH Green Beauty AND Shades of Green, which will be next on my quilting list once Pineapple Blossoms is finished. And then---she and I found a cute (free) pattern that both decided to make for certain individuals, so...we worked together to help pick out each other's fabric. Sorry----I haven't even THOUGHT about taking a picture of the fabric goodies---soon enough though.

Today....arrived home at 2:30 and went straight away into unpacking, starting laundry, picking produce from the garden, heading downstairs to press the newly purchased/washed fabric for Pineapple Blossom's backing, loaded it on the frame as to be ready for starting the quilting tomorrow afternoon, canning another 7 quarts of dill pickles, cleaning & cutting a large bowl full of green beans {will wait until the next picking in two days to actually can the whole lot}.....and now....finally sitting and UPDATING THE BLOG!

"Jared Takes a Wife" isn't a fitting name for this quilt; it was fitting for Bonnie's situation. So, I have renamed it to Green Beauty, since the block is Blackford's Beauty...and well, it's green.

Another "me" day?

First of all, an update on the weather...

THANK YOU MAMA-NATURE for not holding a grudge! All the nasty weather blew south of us; I am afraid to watch the news to see all the damage that is/was unescapable with this system! I'll have to give my parents a call too, because the hometown was right in the path of the storms.

DH and I DID get the deck stained and we hope it had it enough time to dry initially before the rain came. **crossing fingers**. A 2nd coat needs to be done yet, but obviously that'll have to wait until things get dry again...

On the way back, we mosied along our merry way, taking lots of back roads. After a cafe-style lunch at a nearby 'blink-n-ya-miss-it' town, we continued to mosey. RIGHT past a "friend's" house (how thoughtful, right?). Nah....DH needed to pick up a motor that the "friend" was going to tune up. While talking and shootin' the breeze, his dog jumped in and made herself at home: Anje (ahn-gee). CUTE AS A BUTTON!!!! She could easily have come home with us!!!!


After checking out the friend's shop area and saying our departing words, we mosied further north to buy some more stain for the deck's 2nd coat, and then drove some more further north to pick up some thread at a quilt shop, then back south for a stop at Dairy Queen.

Once home, the weather was just starting to act up, so after taking care of the animals, we both put our feet up and napped. Ummmm.....can you call a 1.5 hour "snooze" a nap? Needless to say, my room didn't see any action yesterday. NO BIGGY!

Instead, at 8:00, I figured it was time to do something with these cucumbers.....

I've learned a few things from canning dill pickles in the past;
1) Leave the cucumbers WHOLE if you can
2) If you must cut them, cut them at least 1/4" - 1/2" thick
3) Use dill plants rather than dill seeds if at all possible

Our cucumber plants have only just begun to produce; we have BUKU blossoms that are going to be giving us cucumbers daily! So, I hope to keep up with canning, a little bit at a time. We only have 2 jars of dill pickles left in our panty, but about a dozen bread-n-butter (MY FAVORITE!!!), so, we're going to stock up on some dill.

I haven't found my favorite Diil Recipe yet, so I'm trying another "new" one. Here's the recipe I'm trying this year; of course, since I didn't have that many cucumbers, I halved the recipe. I ended up with the equivalency of 4 quarts, and the recipe worked perfectly in half.

I was able to leave a few cucumbers whole, but also had to cut up about 6 of the cuks that were too big. So, look at this gem!!!! A few years back when I helped my parent's clean out my grandmother's apartment, we were allowed to "help ourselves to anything we wanted." {{Yeah, that's when I "inherited" all my grandmother's fabric and quilting supplies!!!. My DH has an "antique-thing" going on, so he enjoyed sifting through much of her stuff. This cutter is one of the tools we have displaying on our mantel, but last night it found some actual use. That thing is SHARP! It didn't take long to cut through a handful of cuks---sure, I can see that a couple bushel-full would be annoying to do this way, but.....psht! I love how the slices look!

Bounty: 1 quart and 6 pints. How many more will be coming????


Today's tasks:
Sew, Sew, Sew.
DH promised me that my room would see a finish today. I think I'm going to hold him to that.
I want to finish Jared Takes a Wife today.
I need to work on August's BOM since my time is limited over the next two weeks.
I need to update my Stash Report since I didn't report last week.
Then?.....don't know yet. It'll be a classic "look-around-the-sewing-area-for-what-strikes-my-fancy" move. Maybe I'll pull out a UFO? Maybe a WIP? Maybe a PIG? {{Oh yeah, I still have Jen's "floofy" quilt to start}}

Pluggin' along; now all pooped :0(

The title says it all. I have 2 sets of borders planned for this yet, but I kinda feel like a wind-up toy that just ran out of "winding."

So, I'm sitting down for a bit with a pizza cooking in the oven. I'm hoping I'm just low on energy because I haven't really eaten much today {{Hmm....wonder how THAT can happen when there aren't any kids around nagging to make breakfast and dinner and snack..... ;0) }}


Wow---that sashing blends in with the flooring! Hard to tell that it's actually pieced into an almost-top.

I've missed the relaxing days of getting up every morning, sitting with my coffee, inspecting the latest posts from everyone, and then spending much of my day downstairs sewing, quilting, etc.

Today is Friday which means NO SCHOOL. I'm going to have a "ME" day.

I don't wanna clean, so I'm not gonna.
I don't wanna spend hours in the garden, so I'm not gonna (at least not until MAYBE later tonight when it's cooler)

I'm gonna sew.

And last night, during a commercial of "The Ultimate Gift," I quickly ran downstairs and grabbed my machine and block units to set up on the kitchen table. I felt so guilty not sewing, but I really wanted to watch this movie to the end {which, BTW, made me cry and laugh some MORE after my post----A++++ movie!!! Definitely a "chick-flick"). I have a TV downstairs, but we don't have it connected to our satellite; we only have a DVD/VCR set up with it.

Today, I hope to finish all the Jared Takes a Wife piecing to reach flimsy status. I don't have any green thread, NOR do I have an idea in mind for a backing, so I don't know if I can keep plugging away to actually get a finish, but.....we'll see.

Oh yeah...and check out the basement update! I came home on Tuesday to find DH working away on the room. Standing in the room....WOW....walls sure "small-ize" the space!!! And just last night, he said "How 'bout working on the room Saturday? Together, I think we can get it all finished...."

Well, who am I to say NO?? Afterall, I DID set a goal of end-of-July for the room to be done {{secretively: I NEVER dreamed it could actually happen!}}. So...if I'm going to do that on Saturday, I REALLLY want to spend my day "ME-WISE" today :0)

Ugh! What a mess! Need I say anything????

There is just SOMETHING about having everything neat, tidy and clean!!! {{and pay no attention to the door-less cabinet---it always falls off, so we just leave it off}}

and yes....notice how the before picture was taken when it was daylight? I started when I first got home from class today; took a break to get the law mowed (2 hours) and to get into the garden. I finished it up just before sitting down....

When in the garden, I picked a few more pickling cucumbers that are ready for some canning. I plan to do a small batch of pickles on Saturday, so I'm trying to prolong their life by keeping them in cold water in the fridge.

AND...I did get some sewing done tonight as well! :0) :0)

Jared Takes a Wife blocks see some light. I needed to finish up all 120 "green-pointy-units" tonight; sewing and pressing.....**UGH--that was tedious!!!**.....and I couldn't shut down for the evening without actually piecing some blocks together!!! Nine pictured, but ten complete; twenty more to go.

Waiting up for DH right now; he's driving back from "home" and should be home-home within the hour. He's had a long day! Got up with me at 6:30; spent some time tilling up the garden, headed to Marshfield (2.5 hr drive) at 10:00; worked for his sister, and is now heading back tonight. All that driving and working....he'll be ready to collapse for sure.

A Sunday in review & Stash Report June 21 - 27

I began my morning by cutting up a few 2.5" and 4.5" strips to make up 6 (actually 8) more sets. Two of the sets will stay with me. So, in the end, I will be swapping 18 total Buckeye Beauty sets. We are being requested to just piece the 4-patches and HST's so that each swapper can choose how to piece the final blocks. My blocks will be pieced just as they are laid out; they'll be made up with the same layout at Bonnie's Blue Ridge Beauty, which is also a L/E project of mine that has been set aside so I can work on my Star Struck swap blocks. DARN! I don't have the Blue-Ridge L/E listed in my WIP! Grrrrrr....now that's 12!

This brought me up to lunch time. After which...
we took some time enjoying the sun that finally decided to show up.

After about an hour, we were all back in, ready to start some afternoon projects...

Paintbox was the next project I wanted to spend time with today. I needed to finish piecing the 6 other rows that weren't finished last night. Then---sashing across the width of all the rows. OMGoodness! Pinning, pinning, pinning, pinning, pinning, pinning, pinning, pinning, pinning, pinning, pinning. {{that'd be 11 times in case you didn't count}}. PUTZY and enough to drive any ADHD quilter insane with the monotonous steps!!!!

Cassie asked if there was some way to set her up downstairs by me. With a few adjustments and some hunting for another extension cord, I had a new neighbor ;0)

I helped Cassie with the cutting and sandwiching of her back/top/batting/lining, and then set up the Brother with the FMQ foot. Oooo...Cassie was nervous! The first few attempts were tough, so I had her put on my quilting gloves, which seemed to help a little bit, but she was still strugging with the coordination between foot and hands ;0)

This is where she needed to leave it for the evening because it was time for a bath and then bed by 9:00! She has another dentist appointment at 8:30 tomorrow, so I needed to be sure all the girls got to bed at a SOMEWHAT decent time.

I asked Cassie if it was alright if I quilted up the back of her bag. Naturally, she appreciated the assistance. It was fun to work with a small patch to quilt on with the BSR. I haven't used it in quite awhile. This is also a good shot of her piecing. QUITE a bit wonky and I needed to square up the top and back before sandwiching. Still fun though!

Boy! I had had enough of those Paintbox sashings though! It was like putting on borders and we ALL know how some of us feel about those things!!! So, the final piecing of the top will be a goal for tomorrow. In the meantime, I grabbed my Jared Takes a Wife blocks and finished sewing on the gold and light 2" squares to make the "arrow units." I'll finish trimming off those corners when I'm done posting. And...**GASP**....no double sewing on these! They really are too small for even ME to deal with. They'll just be thrown into the crumb box.

And don't you dare laugh at this! I have FINALLY mastered BOILING EGGS! Yeah, yeah....sounds simple enough, right? But I can't STAND IT when you attempt to peel an eggs and the *&@(*! shell sticks to the egg-white, and you LOSE most of your egg! Oh, and BTW---I HATE yolks! The only time I eat the yolk is if I make up a quick lil' deviled-egg treat! Yummmmmm.... Or if I whip up a quick egg salad. Basically, the yolk only gets eaten if it gets mixed up with Miracle Whip (NOT real mayo. YUCK!)

Anyway---my mistake was always putting the eggs in when I first put the water on the stove. I only did it that way because it seemed when I waited for the water to boil and THEN put the eggs in, too many of them cracked due to the instant expansion due to the boiling water. Well---the last batch I boiled, I tried to boil the water first again. Then put the eggs in for 15 minutes. THEN (and I think this is important too!!!), run them under cold water the instant you finish boiling. I even let them soak in cold water for a while (one time it was even over night because I forgot about them).

You'll get one lovely peeled egg just about everytime :0)

Okay, the nervous moment I've been waiting for all week due to all of my NAUGHTY purchases!!!!!

Two finishes...name suggestions?

Two Quilts 4 Kids finishes today. The doggy-themed quilt was quilted with a pantograph named "Chinese Crescents" and the peace-themed quilt was my first free-motion meander on the frame. I outlined many of the flowers/peace signs as I went along.....
All that remains is to fill out the labels and sew them on....

but...I'm stumped on names.

The Olivia themed quilt will be quilted up tomorrow. I didn't feel like getting it loaded on the frame after finishing up two of them today. Besides, I need some thread; I'll use red :0)

I finished up the night downstairs by finishing off the 240 "star arms" for my Jared Takes a Wife. I haven't trimmed the extra fabric yet; and sadly I DO NOT think I'll be double-sewing these seams. They are only 2" squares, and I DO cringe at just tossing the fabric, but I guess that's what "crumb boxes" are for.

I'm actually thinking of keeping this quilt for myself for MY bed! Have you reached the point where you start making quilts but they don't have any recipient in mind? That WAS the plan for this one, but as I was piecing the other day, I REALLLLY was enjoying the greens! My room is a rich hunter green, so it'll be a perfect match.

And she kept going, and going...

Yes, COMPLETELY cliche-ish, but this is EXACTLY the image that was going through my head last night at 11:00. I was still going strong and didn't know when/if I was going to get to the "butt-draggin" phase again. Well, folks....midnight was when I finally turned in; tried to find the "off-switch," and I think managed to actually drift of by 1:00, and now...up by 5:45 again. **shrug**....I guess I'm still working through the "drug-induced-excess-energy" phase. Today is the last day I'm taking 2 pills; starting tomorrow (for 7 days), I taper down to 1 pill/day. The itching has 99% gone away; the face is healing nicely--just a little redness area left about the size of a 2" x 3.5" brick...


So...floor adventure COMPLETED OF THE TO-DO LIST yesterday by 3:00....

3:00 - 3:45 - sewed for 45 minutes on Judy's June Mystery

4:00 - 7:30 - Carpooled and watched the Cumberland Volleyball squad

7:30 - 9:00 - tilled and weeded the garden since the sun FINALLY decided to make an appearance for the day!!!!!

9:00 - 10:45 - finished up Judy's June Mystery - Step #3 (Units 4 & 6 in the picture)


10:45 - 11:30 - didn't want to hang up the sewing machine yet, so plowed through the Jared Takes a Wife 120 4-patch/brick seams and 2"square/brick seams.



The SUPER GOOD THING:
I crossed off ALL of my tasks from the list yesterday that had been on the list for today. I meant to till the garden today, but since the sun made an appearance, the evening was so nice last night! CHECK!
I persevered and finished up the last hour of grouting! CHECK!
What this means....after my eye appointment this AM, I'll be able to SEW SEW SEW guilt free until I decide to mosey on out the door to my parent's later this afternoon. The girls are setting the schedule today.....Mom only has one rule: "We will not leave until the rooms and Loft are clean."

Yeah, so...I'm thinking that'll give me at least three hours of sewing time :0)

Jared/Wife cuts, Dizzy step 2; Stash Report June 7-13

Well, the afternoon shopping excursion yesterday lasted a bit longer that intended. We left the house at 1:00 and returned at 5:30! We hit Menards and Farm-n-Fleet (both what I would consider similar to Home Depot's for those of you not in the Northern Central states). I have all the supplies to finish up the floor, and actually spent another hour putting in the last of the tiles upon returning yesterday afternoon with the newly purchased mortar. Grouting will need to wait until Wednesday, though, because today and tomorrow, I need to be at school all day for a Data Retreat.

The main reason our trip as long as it did was because we headed up to borrow a tile cutter from a bud of DH. No, no, no.....we didn't get sidetracked THERE....but as we were driving back home, we passed "Uncle Mike's Bar-n-Grill"!!! Uncle Mike was cooking (DH called when we were on the road), so we stopped in for dinner; one of the best Patty Melts around!!!!

In addition to the two "manly" shopping stops, we also stopped by Walmart for a few odds-n-ends. I haven't snuck into the fabric section in quite a while; GOOD THING! I found these lovelies calling out to me! I openly admit that I don't mind buying fabric at Walmart; however I WILL admit that there IS a difference between some of the fabric that is available at Walmart. All three of these feel great; not thin, and were the right price. I finished off the bolt of the gray (~5 yards), and bought two yards of the other gray and gold. They gold is going to be used in Jared Takes a Wife...

...see; I already cut it up! After finishing up the floor and getting the girls bathed, I spent a couple of hours downstairs to end my evening. Almost all of the pieces are cut for Jared. I REALLY didn't have any intentions of seriously diving into this project, but......I was feeling guilty from the fabric purchases, so I knew I need to cut into some more fabric before posting my Stash Report for the week! LOL

QOV Mystery #22: Dizzy, step 2 is almost finished. By the time I got to this point last night (~11:00), I didn't have anything left in me to actually finish up the pressing. It STILL kills me to think that quilters just trim off excess fabrics as "throw-aways" when doing this corner-to-corner "flip" method! LOOK at all of those bonus triangles that will be trimmed to 2", finished as 1.5". I already foresee pinwheels (THIRTY of them that would finish at 3" since there are 120 bonus tris here. What a PERFECT size!!!). I'm sure I'll put together another QOV quilt using them!


So, how'd the week end???? A NEW RECORD of USEAGE!!!!! (but now I have a LOT of projects that need finishing!!!!) Judy's June mystery, QOV #22 Dizzy mystery, Jared Takes a Wife; other projects that used fabric this week: Too Good to Cut Challenge (Moonlight) & Buckeye Beauty block swap.

Time for something new....

LOL...Just for Angela, I'd thought I veer off into a new direction. I joked with her that maybe the DOC was right about having the extra energy during these first few days of the medicine dosage! (BTW--the poison ivy is getting better; not so itchy, but a good portion of my face is still quite discolored. I have been keeping some triple-antibiotic salve on to keep the scarring and discoloration to a minimum during the healing stage)

Okay---back to my veer----Oh golly! Not that I need yet anything NEW in my WIP list...but when I opened up by drawer of 2" strips....


...these BEAUTIFUL greens were screaming at me to do something with.


And then, I remembered that Bonnie's Jared Takes a Wife uses 2" strips to make 4-patches.....
...well.......what's a girl to do!?!?!??...
...it simply was meant to be!!!! After chain-piecing, pressing, and counting, I had EXACTLY 140 4-patches; just what the pattern calls for! It's a sign!!!!!
Update: I just reread Bonnie's pattern. It only calls for 120 4-patches (I was confusing the 40 with the 240 2-patch units). Yeah---that means I have 20 spare blocks to play with somewhere else!!!


During the mindless strip-piecing phase, Caitlyn came down with a surprise for me :0)
I'm so glad the girls are reaching a more independent phase and can find their own little tasks to do when I hit my quilting-obsessive-mode.


For the past two hours, I've been tidying up my OVERSTUFFED box of bonus triangle clippings....
....yeah, okay....there are still some left in the box, but stick a fork in me, cuz I'm done!!!!!! THAT's enough of that!!!!! Two hours of pressing! Ugh! I am really thinking of SKIPPING the trimming part until after I piece them together into either pinwheels or broken-dish units. The stack on the left are bonus tris from my Blue Star Struck blocks (yeah, still on the UFO pile!), and the stack on the right is from my Star Struck blockswap sets (I must not have taken any pics of them!!!).


It's just before 5:00. This day has kinda just shuffled by with one little quilting task after another. Time to start preparing something for dinner, and contemplate what to work on for tonight's Friday Night Sew In. It's not too late to sign up over at Crafty Vegas Mom!

UPDATE-UPDATE!Dee pointed out the obvious!!!! The Friday Night Sew In date is NEXT FRIDAY---the 18th. I guess I must be on summer-mode already and losing track of the days already! Oh well----I still plan to be sewing-----how 'bout you???
