Chunky Churndash finished! Paintbox blocks done. Stash report March 15-21 & 22-28

Chunky Churndash finally sees a finish! Just in time to be gifted to my mother for her 60th birthday. The quilting was VERY simple! Stitch-in-ditch. I did not quilt this one in sections, and it's BIG! Gosh---NOW I remember why I like the quilting-in-sections method! I couldn't imagine doing anything elaborate while trying to control all the bulk under the arm. Yikes! But, it's done. Bound...and SOON to be labeled. Oh--it's pictured on our King size bed; it's meant for a full size bed--it should be just right.

I also finished up my last two sets of Paintbox blocks...

Here-n-there throughout the day, I helped Cass set up her bead-loom kit. This was the first time we attempted it, and it went fairly smoothly.
By the time we packed it up for the day, she beaded two bracelets; one for herself and one for Candace.

Chunky Churndash, Snuggler, a Noah's Ark baby quilt gone bad, more pineapple blocks and Carolina Christmas...

The quilting day began by putting the final borders on my Chunky Churndash top (81.5" x 94"). It will need to remain at this stage until I can get some more batting into the house. OR, I may even send this one out to a LA'er.

Then, I put the final borders on Snuggler (71" x 87"), which also will remain at this stage. (No batting, remember?)

Next came some actual "functional" sewing. My stack of "clothes-needing-seam-fixes" had grown to 8 items, so I finally just DID THEM! Two of my shirts, two pants for Caitlyn, one for Cassie, one sweater for Cassie, shirt of Paul's, and a neck-warmer of Paul's. Felt good to tackle that and get them off my shelf!

Looking around and tidying up, I found this panel of Noah's Ark. Knowing it would be a quick finish, I found some flannel Noah Ark theme fabric for the backing, used some small pieces of batting, and went about trying out this 'painter's tape' method of grid line quilting.
All went well until the middle :0( I guess I should have started there? I still don't know if it would have helped.....I used the puffy poly batting which caused the layers to shift a smidge. Oh well, maybe a doll quilt for the girls?

THEN...I PLAYED!

Digging into the 2" strip bin, pulling fabrics, I pieced together 9 more Pineapple blocks (Bonnie pattern). I'm all set to make up a couple of sets in Black, white and red for the January block swap. I'll be calling the quilt shop tomorrow to "put in my order." The shop closes at 4:00; if I leave school by 3:30, I should get there around 3:50. I know she'll be willing to throw some things together ahead of time for me (and wouldn't mind staying open a bit later than 4:00 to accommodate a quilter in need!) She's a great gal!

I also finished up Carolina Christmas Step 1 today as leaders-enders.

My new leaders-n-enders is Bonnie's pattern...ummmm...gosh, can't remember the name; have to find that Quiltmaker again (Jan, 2009?), using blues/whites 4-patches and HST's. My Blue Heaven?? Anyway, now I can move on to Step 2.

Back to the grind-stone tomorrow **sigh**
At least my vacation brought me back to my somewhat normal quilting obsession :0)

yup, I KNEW I shouldn't have parked my butt....

...I was doing SO WELL on both Chunky Churndash and Snuggler; it was an afternoon of borders since that was all that was left for each quilt. One set of borders is on Snuggler with another to go, and the last set of borders for CC....well, the sides are on, and I got "distracted" amidst ironing the sides to put the final top/bottom borders on. Candace (DD #3) decided to touch the blasted iron just long enough, before I could catch her in the act, to do some damage on her hand. **((sigh))**. Drama ensued!

Ice, burn cream, bandaid, lots of hugs, and a snuggle in a quilt with a good movie to calm her down. But....she's learned (the hard way!) :0(

Then, it was time to put dinner in the oven (nothing fancy; keep your pantyhose on---just a simple cardboard pizza spiced up with some Pizza & Pasta Magic Seasoning), but DH and I are going to have egg rolls! YES! LOVE homemade eggrolls!

Then, I parked my butt to check emails and catch up on any blog posts today. That brought me to Carol's post about "what's the block/quilt name?" ......
...and the next thing I knew ... QuiltBlocksGalore.com! (for about 45 minutes!!!!)

At least DH was next to me---he and I enjoyed the search; him "ooohh" and "ahhhh"-ing. I also think I found another couple BOM ideas for the next 11 months....

Had intentions of getting to the quilt shop today to buy some fabs for the Block Swap as sewmanyswaps. IT - WAS - CLOSED!!!
GRRRRRRR!!!! And I wasn't about to drive another 30 miles with the hopes that another shop was open only to find it closed as well. So.....**sigh**.....the Pineapple blocks will have to wait until Monday evening!

Okay---off to help hubby make some eggrolls!

Chunky Churndash. Well, not QUITE a CHECK! Afterall, I'm AM human. Three finishes in one day would be just a wee bit insane. Besides, I'm all out of batting, so I wouldn't have been able to finish this off today anyway ;0)

Did you ever feel like you're putting together a puzzle when quilting?

often I do!

This was my status last night before throwing my hands up...no longer motivated because I didn't know how to "finish this puzzle"...((Back-pedaling)) Yesterday found me by-passing Chunky Churndash because I was suddenly motivated and inspired to finish up Lucidity. And although this quilt LOOKS simple, for those of you that aren't border-making lovers, this would be a monkey on your back with all those lonnnnng blasted sashing strips!!! Really---it was like putting 11 borders on one quilt! As stated, this was my status as of 8:00 last night....backing ALLLLMOST pieced, and I simply didn't have any passion left after being 6 INCHES short!!!!!!! Bad calculation?? No, I just crossed my fingers and hoped it would fit...... sadly, it didn't...

...so, after tucking Candace into bed last night (and seeing what I had done with HER pieced backing), I was inspired this morning to throw in a strip of left over blocks. CrazyMom throws these dandies into her backings quite often too. I'm growing quite fond of them myself. This decision meant that I needed to rip out the seam I made last night and spent a good hour piecing (and cutting) the extra strip for the backing...
But my puzzle play wasn't through...noooooooooo. Next, I went to my roll of batting, not really knowing how much I had left on the roll. 20 inches SHORT across the entire width!!!!!! Scrounging in my storage cabinet, I found one package of 60x60 batting, but didn't want to cut into that yet. Hmpf.... I should have taken a picture of the what the downstairs looks like right now, because I dug (DEEP) into my bag(s) of leftover batting, tossing batting all over the place in hopes to organize it somehow.... All sizes; some large, some long strips, you name it. I ended up piecing 8 total long/little/stubby pieces together to have enough batting.

Back to work....
...with my Princess helper. Caitlyn prepped my basting pins for me and even helped me put a few in. She was so proud.
Nothing fancy with the quilting. I chose one of my decorative stitches and travelled the length of each sashing strip in purple thread...
...and Lucidity sees a finish! Binding-n-all (just no label YET).
Plans for this one??? Not sure, but it's wrapped around me as I type. The colors are lovely, lines are crisp and clean.

And tomorrow---Goal: Finish Christmas Lights I'm ALMOST done with that one too (worked on it yesterday). I only have binding left on it. SO, I'm doing well on my goals I posted about last week:
1) Finish Chunky Churndash (We'll see how close I get to that, because I'll work on that tomorrow as well, EVEN if I need to stay up until Midnight!!! Oh, wait! I'll probably be doing that anyway!)
2) Finish Lucidity. CHECK!
3) Finish Christmas Lights . CHECK! (Almost) I'll only need a couple of hours to check this one off my list.
4) Start Carolina Christmas. CHECK! I'm doing the last part of step #1 as a leader-ender right now.

Nice way to finish off 2009....stayed tuned for a final '09 post tomorrow evening!

Quilting time returns...

For most of the day yesterday and Sunday evening (upon returning from parent's house), I have been enjoying my time downstairs with my Bernina. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

I have decided to put together a 2010 BOM, so I pieced up the first of those. More to come on that Thursday, so come back if you want a slow-moving project for the upcoming year leading to a finish by December 2010. Some sneaky-peek pics of January's BOM choices are at bottom of post. Very traditional, simple geometric blocks in reds and blues.

I then moved onto the Chunky Churndash. It had been just a wee bit too small, so I added two more rows, which meant I needed to piece together another 22 blocks. The top center is together with borders to come today. My mind had already started moving to the quilting of the quilt, and I knew I was running low on safety pins, so.....

Out came Christmas Lights. I spent the afternoon quilting the two sections, pieced them together and started cutting and sewing on the set of borders. At 8:00, the quilt made it to the stage pictured; today will bring on a FINISH (and I'll have some pins again to use on Chunky Churndash.

Sneaky-Peek of January BOM choices

It's almost here...

C'mas vacation, that is.

Some of you fellow teachers around the nation have already started rubbin' it in that you're on break----we have school through Wednesday yet.

I have only been putzing with some sewing a couple of hours here, a couple of hours there. I have really missed the obsession of needing to sew nearly 24/7...but soon! Soon! The time will return!

Two main quilt tops I've been working on simultaneously, toggling between each of them, acting as leaders-n-enders to each other.....
Lucidity...

and Chunky Churndash (for my parents).
Chunky Churndash is going to have to take the front burner now, since it will be a C'mas gift to my parents; but thankfully we won't be celebrating with them for another couple of weeks. Therefore, I'll have all of break to work on it. (NOT that I'm going to----take all break, that is).

Actually, I have some ambitious goals set over my vacation...
1) Finish Chunky Churndash
2) Finish Lucidity
3) Finish Christmas Lights (it's been in "wait-mode" for a couple of months; all sandwiched and basted already, so once I really get motivated on it, it shouldn't take much more than a day...)
4) Start crackin' away on Bonnie's Carolina Christmas mystery. I needed a new leader-n-ender today as I neared the end of sewing Chunky Churndash rows, so I start strip sewing Step 1... (see below)

The start of Carolina Christmas... Colors chosen are greens, purples, white and black. I have yet to miss one of Bonnie's mysteries, so... time (SOON!) to start cracking away at it.


Christmas is right around the corner---holy buckets! Where has this year gone? The girls went to the library last Monday for the annual reading of "T'was the Night Before Christmas" by Santa.

Snow finally hit last week, too, so it actually feels like Christmas now.

Cass had her Winter Program Tuesday evening. DH drove on the way home and picked a fight with a big doe. Sadly, no one really won the fight; the car is sitting dead in the driveway (still), and the deer didn't fare too well either. However, we all walked away without a single scratch. We're still waiting to hear from the insurance company to see what the game-plan will be... until then, I've been bumming rides with DH and coworkers.

...I have sewn two of the rows together....
But I needed to refill the coffee, so decided to take a little break.

In the meantime, I hear this from the upstairs...
Cass: "MOM! Can Caitlyn and I clean the bathroom mirror?"
Me: **um, duh....** "Of course sweetie!"
**5 minutes later**
Cass: "MOM! Caitlyn and I have this great idea--can we clean the rest of the house??"
Me: **am I in heaven**... "That sounds wonderful girls!"
**10 minutes later**
Caitlyn: "MOM! Can we clean to windows too?"
Me: **are they serious--they should know my answer** "Sure honey! Go right ahead!"
**upstairs now on my break, looking at overly sprayed, streaky windows and a rag that I could squeeze to refill the Windex bottle**
BUT....it's the thought that counts :0)

My bi-weekly check - in: Volleyball and quilting! What better life is there??? :0)

Heya, heya. TWO MORE WEEKS and then my life will slow back down (okay...maybe THREE!!!) State volleyball is three weeks aways; this week brings on Regional tournaments and I am very hopeful for the girls to make it to the Finals. HOWEVER, the dreadful bugs have started working through the squad -- one of my players just texted me, saying she was at a 102.6 fever and throwing up. UGH UGH UGH!

We had our 6-team invitational yesterday, and did about as good as expected -- 3rd. We're a small school, and we always put ourselves up to the challenge of player larger schools. The two teams ahead of us were division 3 schools (we are division 4). We did beat one division 3 school (4th place) and two division 4 schools (5th and 6th). Tuesday brings on our first Regional game, which we SHOULD come away quite easily with a victory. Then, we will advance to Friday's Regional Semi-final and we need to be firing on all cylinders to get beyond that match. GOOD LUCK GIRLS!!!

I spent all day today doing laundry, updating volleyball statistics and working on Pre-Calculus problems for the upcoming week. I wanted to get some quilting done, but that sadly just didn't happen today.

However, last weekend, I DID find some time to sew :0).....

I needed to clear up some floor space, so I buckled down and sewed together 12 rows of Perkiomen Daydreams. As soon as the vball season ends, THIS will be the project that I tackle full-force, because my lovely PIF lady (Carol - Cornfield Quilter) agreed to quilt it as my PIF gift. HOW INCREDIBLE IS THAT?!?!?!

As leaders-enders, I kept sewing up some hour-glass blocks for my Chunky Churndash.

I also pulled out a top that my MIL requested to be quilted by me. I washed up the backing and sandwiched it all together. I'll have to keep looking at it until I get inspired with a quilting design, because I'm clueless right now as to how I will quilt it. ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL BE GREATLY, GREATLY APPRECIATED :0) :0) :0)

It's an official NEW record -- OVER TWO WEEKS of nothing from yours-truly :0(

BUT
Yesterday, I MADE time to get back downstairs to do some sewing. Yeah, I had a bazillion other things I should have been doing, but ....eh..... it was still there for me to tackle last night in front of Sunday Night Football.

I finished up the Christmas Lights step 2 from Bonnie Hunter (Quiltmaker magazine), and kept going since I just received the latest Quiltmaker in the mail on Saturday. I know this quilt won't be very large, but I still decided to quilt it in sections to really make the quilting pretty, so..... this is the current state and will wait patiently on the floor until I find a good day or two to quilt it. MAYBE, just MAYBE this weekend?!?!!?!? I should be able to catch up a bit with my life on Thursday and Friday since the students don't have school. We teachers have inservice....and I have NO TOURNAMENTS this weekend.....so......! It's looking promising!!!!


While working on the CL mystery, I was also sewing up the hour-glass blocks for Chunky Churndash as leaders-enders. Recall that this will be gifted to my parents for helping out this summer with the girls when I had so many math workshops.

Our school has survived yet another Homecoming week--this is my DEAR, DEAR coworker (and former mentor!). This lady is amazing---I coached under her for 8 years and she taught me so much. I never would have been able to accept the Head Coach position without her former guidance and leadership. Even now, her door is open when I need an "ear" with the vball season. This is also the lady whose family I made quilts for last Christmas (Masha's Wonky Nines, Andre's Out of this World, Isaac's My Blue Heaven, and Jan's Family Gems)


Okay everyone----I'm ACTUALLY off to catch up on some blogs, while watching the EVER-SO-AWAITED Packers vs. Vikings football game! I had told my DH before the game started that I'm staying neutral because I think Favre is an amazing athlete, yet ..... well....it's the PACKERS! However-------with 30 seconds left until half time, I have found myself rooting for the Packers! HA! (Afterall, isn't it easier to root for the under dog???) :0( Sorry Pack...but sadly Favre, along with Adrian Peterson, the Vikings are actually looking like a favored team this year.

But...alas.....my loyalty still stands.....GO PACK!

Chunky Churndash on hold... in the meantime...

Sadly, I haven't had a chance to get to the LQS to see if I can find the perfect gray for the Chunky Churndash yet, nor can I see the trip possible until Friday. So......

In the meantime....



Bonnie Hunter's Perkiomen Daydreams has seen some more progress. If my math is correct (remember, it's the summer and my brain takes a vacation sometimes!), I have 256 (of the 400) blocks completed. Laying them out certainly wasn't all that easy, but definitely exciting. This quilt is HUGE! I will not be able to lay all 400 blocks out at any one time. The quilt is 100"x100" (when complete). My game plan is to piece it into two halves (top 10 rows and the bottom 10 rows).

Just to give you an idea of the size----that is a twin size mattress resting on its side at the top of the pic. I didn't even see it until after posting live!

I have been sitting, relaxing (with WINE again!!!!), and watching the evening news. FINALLY there was a heart-warming (and tear jerking) story. I don't know if any of you watched the ABC World News (with Charles Gibson) this evening, but there was a story about some individuals who came to the need of a turned-over vehicle in Milwaukee (Wisconsin). (watch it here: Rescue ABS News video. When there are stories that involved children in the age ranges of 3-9, they usually have a bigger impact on me since those are the ages of my girls. There was a 4-year old boy strapped in his carseat in the back of the flaming vehicle; and my heart just went out to the gentlemen fighting to get him out! It is so wonderful to be reminded of the good that does exist in our world when we are bombarded FAR too much with all the violence-involved news stories.

I don't know if I feel up to quilting tonight; at least I don't at the moment. It feels good to just veg and look around at my much neglected house. **sigh** Okay, so it doesn't feel good actually seeing the mess, clutter and unkeptness; it actually gets me stressed out a bit because of the guilt I feel! But...doing nothing does feel nice.

Chunky Churndash progress...

61 blocks done and ready for the hour-glass blocks. Hopefully the perfect fabric will jump into my lap tomorrow!

At 4:00, I took yet another small break and decided to crack open the bottle of wine I bought last night. (Hey---it was five o'clock by Angela, so I figured I was okay!!!) :0) I took a pic of the wine glass; I have a set of 6 and they are absolutely beautiful. I am not (by NO means) a lady who is hoitsie-toitsie! Give me a sweatshirt and pair of blue jeans, and I'm happy. BUT, I insist on using these glasses everytime I have some wine (which is, like, once or twice a year!) They were a wedding present from my German host family, and are hand painted. The paint protrudes off the glass; pictures don't do it justice.



DH took his time getting home from a Sunday's day of work, so I continued enjoying myself downstairs by tackling some red/white/blue string blocks. I know I have other projects sitting idle, but it was fun to put together some mindless 5.5" blocks. I don't know exactly what I have planned for these yet, but am thinking of doing some HSTs with these and white fabric.

As much as I would love to head downstairs right now for yet a few more hours of sewing fun, I actually should make sure I'm gathered for tomorrow's math workshop.

My own personal Quilting Retreat day

As a thank you to my parents (mostly Mom) for helping out with the girls this week, I am making a quilt to go with their newly painted Guest Bedroom. Short version: in June when they were on their first "vacation" in YEARS, the weather was quite rainy, and their sub-pump decided to give out. It had rained on a Tuesday; they arrived home on Saturday, but hadn't needed to go downstairs until Sunday night----so.....by the time they finally realized the "problem?", the ENTIRE (finished) basement was ruined; carpet needed to be torn up, drywall needed to be replaced. This meant (and still means), a new basement (huge "living" area, 2 guest rooms, and one bathroom.)

I had seen the room last week when I picked Mom up before heading to my sister's house. So, I had some of my blues and grays on hand to "try them out" in the room. After perusing Quiltville.com for the perfect scrappy pattern, I (we) decided on Chunky Churndash, which I had already printed off sometime last year with hopes of making it someday.
Now---here's the extremely amazing part!...
With paint samples in hand, I headed out to Hancock Fabrics yesterday to find the perfect gray for the hour-glass blocks. Besides, Hancock was having a HUGE 50% off sale---perfect timing!
*shaking head, taking pulse, thermometer in mouth*
Nope....not sick! No temperature! Steady 60 beats per minute pulse....
so....HOW on earth could I have come home completely empty handed?!?!?! Seriously! I was on a mission, and the mission failed. I must have walked the aisles three times before throwing my hands up in the air. Not only did the perfect fabric elude me, I wasn't in the mood to find any "great deals" either! So, back in the car and off to Walmart to see if they had the perfect gray. NOPE! Then, off the the LQS (of my mom's town)--NOTHING EITHER! I simply am flabergasted! It seems that when I'm NOT looking for fabrics, it jumps into my hands and cart, but when I NEED the perfect fabric, it is simply no where to be found. That dang MURPHY!


However, I will not lose hope. I plan to head to my LQS tomorrow to see if I can find the perfect gray. Until then, I will make up the 61 "churndash" blocks that are needed for the quilt. I am childless AND husbandless today! I have been downstairs cutting and sewing since 9:00 and am taking a small lunch break at the moment; nothing fancy; just some spaghetti noodles with sauce. All the pieces have been stripped and cut for the churchdashes and should go together rather smoothly.

2:28 break
Needed to take a small break, so came up for a PB&J (peanut butter and jelly sandwich, for those of you non-mommies out there) :0). I'm also relaxing with a cup of tea; something I haven't had in a while. Not being an Englander, I rarely drink tea, but do like the lemon green tea varieties.

All 61 blocks are prepped, having sewn all the square segments into "rows" of the block. I now need to press the rows in order to piece the complete block together. Then, multiply that by 61.

My background noise of choice today started with Maid of Honor, then The Hulk, and I am almost finished with Aliens. Yeah, not quite the norm, relaxing background shows that I usually have playing, but I was getting tired of the same ol', same ol'. :0)

OH! AND! I almost forgot! I did have about a 10 minute break around 1:00 when I saw a MOUSE dart across the carpeted area downstairs. **Shudder** So, I grabbed my box of Freezer paper and stalked around for a bit (on my tiptoes!!) trying to fight the little bugger! Nice visual, huh????? Amidst my search, I did notice that one container of mouse/rat poisoning had been emptied! Gosh---how long has that (those?) little monster been mooching off of us??? I haven't seen any mice since winter ended. Ugh!

OC Quilt and Wall-Hanging Tops DONE

Done, Done, Done! I hit my "creative" flow last night at 7:30, and sewed, sewed, sewed. As the picture shows, I DID decide to use my left over #2 blocks for the border. I needed to put together 52 more in order to have the completed border---I didn't mind making them one bit. I was in "sew-mode" last night! I think I'll be gifting this one to my oldest daughter, Cassie. She has a queen size bed (allll to herself), and doesn't have a quilt for it.



This wallhanging is what I'm even MORE proud of. I needed to sew four more complete Orange Album blocks---that didn't take too long, though. I wanted to use of ALLLLLLL of my "left-over" pieces since I didn't use the on-point setting for the quilt. So, I tinkered with arrangements of those little corner blocky things from step #3, and found a way to arrange them in the border. Yay me :0) An additional 16 needed to be put together, but again---not a big deal. 30 minutes later, they were done. I also added four blue corners to the border to make it complete :0) I'm very pleased, and the colors are FUN, BRIGHT, and EXCITING!

So, today came the time to play with some block designs for the 6.5" "Creamsicle Thank You block" for Bonnie. I created these two and will be sending both her way. I'm also going to go through my stash for the perfect fat-quarter to include in the package. It realllllllly is the least I (we) could do.

I hope all of your OC's are coming along nicely as well.

So, for the next week, I have a few goals:

• Finish Cassie's 30's quilt (might NO LONGER be hers now that OC will be hers)
